Water stop dimensions – How to use the water stop

Water Stop, also known as leakage preventer, is a roll of rubber or plastic (metallic types are also available) with a width ranging from twenty to thirty centimeters, and a roll length of approximately thirty meters. Its purpose is to prevent leaks at the joint or expansion joint during pouring.

Water Stop dimensions:

  • Roll length: 30 meters longitudinally.
  • Width options:
    1. 20 cm
    2. 24 cm
    3. 30 cm

Water Stop is primarily and effectively used in water facilities and extensively due to the multiple applications of concrete structures in environmental infrastructure. It acts as a barrier resisting the path of water seepage at the joint due to the abundance of interlocking fins with concrete, making it difficult for leaked water to follow a more complex and challenging twisted path.

Water Stop is utilized in various situations including:

  1. Pouring joint between the base and the wall.
  2. Pouring joint in floor slabs.
  3. Horizontal pouring joint in walls.
  4. Vertical pouring joint in walls.
  5. Pouring joint between walls and ceiling.
  6. Horizontal pouring joints for swimming pools.
  7. Expansion and settlement joints.
  8. Construction pouring joints between horizontal and vertical pours.

How to use Water Stop:

  • It is used with precision and care where half of the segment is fixed at the top of the tank or cover, and the other half is with the perimeter.
  • The ends of the segments are connected to each other using an electric welding iron.

Water Stop is used when pouring the floor of the water tank, where it is placed inside the tank floor on the wall side, a part of it, approximately 12 cm, while the rest protrudes upwards and is inside the tank wall during pouring of concrete.

Generally, Water Stop is used in concrete walls poured in two stages to prevent water leakage from the inside. It is placed so that the lower half is poured in the first part of the wall, leaving the upper half without pouring to be poured with the completion of the concrete wall. It can also be used in concrete floors that can be poured in two stages.

Water Stop is one of the lines of defense against water and not the only one, as it is necessary to take necessary precautions to prevent water penetration from the inside or to the structural element.

In conclusion, we would like to emphasize once again the importance of expansion joints in construction operations. These simple yet crucial engineering elements play a vital role in maintaining building stability, preventing cracks, and structural damage.

By implementing the correct steps and following important advice, engineers and contractors can successfully install expansion joints properly, thereby ensuring structural stability and durability in the long run. Therefore, we urge you to consider expansion joints in every construction project, and to exercise precision and care in their proper implementation.
